5 Easy Halloween Decorating Ideas

Now that it's officially October, it's time to get out ALL the pumpkins and go wild.  I don't know about you, but the holidays are giving me all the feels this year after everything 2020 has thrown at us.  A little change in the routine and some special activities sound fantastic!

So, getting the house in the spirit just makes sense!  After all, even if we're not in full lockdown anymore, we're all spending more time at home than we probably did this time last year.

Here are a few easy Halloween decorating ideas for 2020 --- feel free to take these as seriously as you want, or get the kids involved and let it become a fun family activity.

1. Spooky Halloween Candles

This idea is so simple it's not really even a craft!  I have had this LED candle set from Walmart for years and they have come in handy so many times.  We used a bunch of them originally at my brother's rehearsal dinner when we couldn't have real candles, and since then I have pulled them out to add a little ambiance to all sorts of little gatherings.  Bonus - they do even have a timer and it works quite well.

Now they are making an appearance on my Halloween fireplace mantle, and I thought it would be fun to give them a little extra Halloween flair.  So, I pulled out my trusty Cricut and cut out some little teeny bats and then stuck them with removable tape to the candles.  Voila!  Halloween flair.

Otherwise, little shapes like these are quite easy to find at your favorite local craft store.

2. Level Up Your Faux Pumpkins

Grab a paint pen, acrylic paints, rhinestones, feathers - you name it!  Plain faux pumpkins can really be taken to another level without a ton of money or effort.

This year I decided to get black pumpkins for the first time and embellished them with a gold paint pen.  I love how they turned out!

While I was searching for ways to dress up a faux pumpkin, I also came across this sweet blog written by a mom-daughter duo who happen to also be in Charleston!  Such a small world.  They dressed up their faux pumpkin with washi tape and embellishments and it looks fabulous...

3. Garlands Everywhere

Garlands are maybe the simplest and easiest way to add some festive fun.  They aren't too expensive to buy usually and they are also easy to make!

I actually have a little drawer in a console table downstairs where I keep our "happy birthday" banner always at the ready.  Since it's light and folds up it's very easy to pull that out really quick for a birthday fete.  Same thing with the holidays - pretty sure I have paper, pom pom, fabric scrap garlands and more for each and every one!

If you aren't super crafty and want to grab a fun pumpkin garland for Halloween decorating, we just added one to our shop here.

4. Seasonal Florals

There are a few spots in my house that I change out depending on the season.  Most of the year, I have a pretty white hydrangea arrangement in a large vase on this table.

Almost 5 years ago, now, I made this Fall arrangement though that I just store with all the other Fall and Halloween decorations and switch out in early October.  We enjoy it all the way through Thanksgiving when this table becomes a Christmas bonanza.

You can catch seasonal florals on sale at the craft store just after the season (or honestly, sometimes when it's still fall because retail is always so far ahead!) and make something pretty to use year round.

5. Yarn Wreaths

This is one of my favorite super easy seasonal crafts and it's perfect for Halloween decorating!  Grab some orange and black yarn, a simple styrofoam wreath form, and get wrapping.  It's an easy craft to do with little ones, too.

They're generally easy to make and easy to store - WIN WIN!

Yarn wreath tutorials abound on the internet, like this popular one from Danielle Burkleo, but I also found this adorable monster yarn wreath on DIY network...
